The Secret Gift| Short Story

It was December and the snow was falling outside. I sat in my room with wrapping paper, tape, scissors, and sweets everywhere. There was mess everywhere, which I was greatly annoyed by. The gift was not meant to be this hard to put together. I put the chocolate and sweets in a small box and wrapped it up. Then started to wrap it up. I groaned, it looked awful. All lumpy with patches of ripped wrapping paper. I tore off the paper and looked around for another way to wrap the gift up.

"Maybe I shouldn't do it. It is a stupid idea. He won't even thank me for it. I mean, he won't even know it is from me so he will not be able to thank me for it. What if someone saw me leave it by the classroom door? I would never live it down." I said to myself.

I grabbed a Twix, and sat on my bed with my laptop. I opened up Youtube and searched for something to watch but I could not get the idea of doing this Secret Christmas Gift out of my head. I looked over at the mess, and sighed.

I put down my laptop, and went downstairs to find a paper bag or something. In a box, in the basement, I found an unused green paper gift bag. This was perfect! I got the paper bag and took it up to my room. Then I grabbed a piece of paper and started to write my friend's name on it to glue to the front of the gift bag, "John Lopers."
But then I thought of something. There was bound to be at least one person in his class who would see my writing and know straight away who it belonged to. I grabbed my laptop, opened a word document, typed out "John Lopers" and ran downstairs to print it out. Then I ran back upstairs, cut the name tag to a size that would fit and look nice on the gift bag, stuck it on and started to fill the gift bag with the chocolate and sweets I had collected. I had chocolate, sweets, and chewing gum. I wanted a little more to put in, so I sneaked down to the kitchen and looked in the snack cupboard. There were two cereal bars left, one was apple and the other was coconut.

I grabbed the cereal bars and ran back up to my room, and dropped them into the gift bag, then I taped the bag shut. I tidied up all my mess, then placed the gift bag into my school bag. My plan was to get to school early the next day and to leave it by John's classroom door, which was the class next to mine, then hide and see how he reacted when he opened it.

But when I arrived at school I could not do it. The gift bag stayed in my bag the whole day. I even thought of getting it over with and just giving it straight to him but he was always with his friends and as I was a girl and he was a boy there would obviously be talk about me giving him the gift. I sighed. I would do it the next day, which also happened to be Friday, and the last day of school before the Christmas Holidays started.

The next day I got to school early. Nobody was there, so I left the package by the classroom door of John and ran down the corridor and down the back stairs. When I arrived downstairs I saw John arrive with two friends! I was nervous and scared, but also glad he would be one of the first to see it and that nobody would be able to steal it.

I went to the toilets, to fix my make-up as I had had no time to do it earlier as I was in a hurry to get to school early, and then went back upstairs. I arrived to see John surrounded by his friend group. The gift bag was opened and his friends and him were sucking on sweets. They were all talking about the gift and wondering who had left it there. I wanted to laugh, as of course none of them guessed it was me.

Then one of John's friends saw me and asked, "Was it you that left this for John?"

I am really bad at acting but somehow I managed to keep a straight face and say, No, it wasn't me."

Just then my teacher arrived, and I hurried to class, partly relieved that I could get away from the chat of the secret gift giver for a while. I was bound to break the secret sooner or later and I did not want to do that.

The rest of the day I watched as John and his friends went round trying to find who had left him the bag of chocolate and sweets and even though they had no idea it was me, I did my very best to stay out of their way. So... you could imagine how I felt when my class teacher told us that we were going to have a mini Christmas party with John's class. We filed in to his classroom, and I did my best not to look at him but as he was one of my friends- at the time- he came over to say "Hello" to me and I acted a little awkwardly, which hopefully he did not notice.

John had hardly spoken to me all day because of his gift and trying to find the giver so he could thank them. On his desk, John had the gift bag open and I watched as he took out a cereal bar and broke some off for Diane, the girl sitting next to him. I watched as he took out a mini bag of sweets and threw it across the room for one of his friends.

My class teacher saw the bag and went over and asked him what it was.
"It's a gift." John answered, with a smile, taking another bite of the cereal bar.
"Who was it from?" my teacher asked.
"I don't know." was John's reply.
"Oh,,, you have a secret admirer!"

I felt like banging my head on the table.
Maybe I kind of was a secret admirer, I mean who wouldn't like John. He was funny, musical, clever... I mean he was a great singer and had a great sense of humour too. And he looked especially nice today. He was wearing a red t-shirt and a black zippered jumper.
But having someone say the words, "Secret admirer" our loud made my heart skip a beat.

After the mini, slightly boring Christmas party, in which I hardly ate any of the food because I was so nervous we were finally allowed to go off on break. But throughout the whole last lesson, which was not with John or any of his gang of  friends, I could not get the whole gift thing out of my head and as soon as I got home I sent John a message on Facebook.

"The gift was from me. Glad you liked it!"

"Thank you!"

"Your welcome!"

We had never talked much before I gave him the gift, but after that day.. at least for a while... we started to talk much more. It was a great, and I am so glad I did it in the end.
