I Was Homeschooled..|| Get To Know Me

When I have mentioned to people before that I was home-schooled I'd often get comments like, "I guess you got to just sleep and relax all day and do nothing" or "How do you cope with that? I wouldn't ever be able to do that, with my siblings and mum". So, I should clear up both of these before I continue. I didn't get to sleep all day and do nothing. I defiantly had lessons and plenty of work to do, even though I do admit I often would do my work in my pyjamas if I could. And about coping, I must admit it wasn't always easy having two younger brothers around all the time, even though I wouldn't have changed it for anything. And also there were times there would be arguments and falling outs with my mum over my work but I loved having her as my teacher and encourager with all my work.

I have been home-schooled on and off for my whole school career. We would study from a course my mum would have or use online school sites. I was part of a total of three online schools in total. With online school, there were a number of ways it would be done. On one online school I participated in was like an actual class that we logged into and we would be on a virtual classroom with other students and a teacher. With that my mum wouldn't really need to be involved as much as there was a teacher teaching the lesson, giving us homework and grading it after we finished and sent it in through the site. The other two online schools I took part in where not as exciting, we would be given a schedule at a set of work we had to do and we were left to go through it alone, e-mailing our tutor if we needed anything, with this my mum would be a more involved in our work.

My mum always went all out with everything, which was always amazing. In the house we currently live in, she even set out one of our basement rooms into a schoolroom where we would do most of our work. It actually looks like a real classroom with a big desk, posters on the wall, and shelves full of books. We did all the normal subjects too, and my mum even got us into doing art for a while even though I was, and still am, terrible at drawing I loved learning to draw. My favourite subjects have always been English, as I love reading and writing, and History.

One of my favourite parts of home-schooling, growing up, was huddling on the sofa or my mum's bed, with my two brothers and my mum, and her reading books to us.

There were plenty of benefits and highs of studying at home. For example being able to go out to a café for lunch or go for a walk or go shopping with my mum in the middle of the school day. There were also home-schooling groups where we could meet other home-schoolers and do activities together like go down to the lake, or do art together, or just have picnics in the park...even though I always seemed to be the oldest in these groups. I also got to study more at my own speed, and not have to worry about moving on with the rest of the class like in a real school. I was able to make a couple of online friends, from some of my online schooling. And I always had two kind and supportive people, my parents, to help with my work who actually were interested in the progress of the work I was doing. You also can't also deny that there was never a problem of having bad school lunches because we always got to eat our mum's cooking, and very few people can say they could go up to their room during the day anytime they wanted.

However, there were obviously a couple of downsides too. I did have Youth Group on Friday evenings and Church on Sunday mornings, but except for that and the occasional Home-schooling groups, I didn't really hang out with people my age, therefore didn't really have many friends. I have always been an introvert too so joining any clubs or groups was always rather difficult for me to do, so I didn't join anything, except for an art class that I went to with one of my brothers, but I never talked to any of the other art students there. I did go to scouts, but as I live in a French speaking area the scout group was all in French which was often a struggle for me because I have always struggled a bit in the language.

But I wouldn't ever change anything because I absolutely loved home-schooling, and was given some opportunities I don't think I would have gotten otherwise. And even thought I did have struggles, just like any student, I know having the experience has helped form the person I am today. I am so thankful that my parents made the selfless decision to home-school me.

I have also gone on from that to studying at University online, on the Open University-which currently I am taking a year break from.

So, what was your school experience like?
Did/do you like school?
