Doing What's Best ๐Ÿ‘ถ|| Short Story

Twenty year old Rosanna  closed the door quietly behind her as she left, tears streaming down her face. It was really hard leaving her behind, but she knew that for both of them right now that letting go was what was best.

*

Two months ago she had been welcomed into the home of Joanne and Alex Rogers, and their twins, when she needed a place to stay with her month old daughter, after her baby's father left them for another women.

She had gotten a job in the local hotel, as a waitress, and Joanne looked after little Julia when she worked.

But things had gotten harder when the hotel started to let some of their staff go due to money problems. Rosanna knew that her job was unsteady and any day the day could come that she may have no work at all. But she knew that she had to do what was best for her baby. Julia was all she had. The most important person in her life.

Her parents had kicked her out as soon as they had found out she was pregnant, which led her to move into the house of her baby's father but on the day she went into labour he had packed his bags and left.

She had been having a really hard time recently and prayed things would start looking up for her soon, so she could give her daughter the life she had always dreamed of growing up.

Then one morning, when she was thinking things over, she was called to the hotel manager's office, "I am really sorry to let you know that we are going to have to let you go. You have until the end of the week. You are a great worker and I hope you'll find a new job in the near future."

Rosanna had burst into tears on the spot, and begged her manager to keep her on, "I really need this job. I need the money. I have a baby back home."

"I'm sorry, Rosanna. But nothing can be done." he apologized, "Now, you better get back to work."

That night she had gone home, she rocked Julia in her cot, with tears in her eyes. This was not the life she had planned for her child. Things never seemed to work out for her.

The next morning she woke up early, and walked into the kitchen, with Julia in her arms. Joanne was already there, preparing breakfast.

"You are up early." Joanne smiled, taking Julia, and handing Rosanna a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon and buttered toast, "Couldn't you sleep?"

Rosanna looked at her friend, and shook her head. She didn't want to tell her that she had no job at the end of the week. Saying it out loud seemed to make it all seem more real and she just wished it was all a bad dream.

"I needed to get out early, I wanted to take a walk before work to get some fresh air." Rosanna mumbled, "Is that alright?"

"Of course, I can look after your little princess.." Joanne smiled, "Sometimes it feels she is one of mine, part of the family."

Rosanna smiled, as she quickly ate the food before her. An idea forming in her mind. She knew it wasn't the best thing to do but it would be the best for her little girl and she wanted to give her child the best life possible.

So, after work, that evening Rosanna packed her things and went to bed early. For her  plan to work she needed to wake up before Joanne.

On her bedside table she had written a note that said, "I have to leave. Thank you for everything you have done for me. Look after my baby. Please give her the life she deserves."

Early the next morning she tiptoed downstairs with her things, and placed them on the front porch, before going back up to bring down Julia and the note. She lay the note on the kitchen table, kissed her baby with tears streaming down her face, and placed her in the rocking cradle that was in the kitchen and headed towards the door. She looked back at her baby, peacefully sleeping, and her heart felt like it had been shattered into a million pieces.

"I love you so much. I always will. But I have to do what's best for you." she whispered, then slipped out the door, closing it quietly behind her.

She could hardly see, through her tears. It was really hard leaving her behind, but she knew that for both of them right now that letting go was what was best.
