Late Night Talk With My Cousins

Late night talks are the best, in my opinion. They always seem to hold more weight and teach you more about a person than you knew before. They seem to reach a deeper more truthful level of conversation that never seems to happen during the day. I am sure I am not the only one that thinks this way.

I personally have only had about four or five late night talks with people in my twenty years, but my favourite was over the Christmas Holidays, when my cousins, Elise and her brother, came to visit us. I guess it was my favourite because I was not particular that close to the people of previous discussions at the early hours of the morning, but opening up to people we trust and have known forever is just easier. We were up until about four or five in the morning, I think, but I really can't remember. All that I remember is it was their last night, and we got to bed in the early hours of the morning and we had to have an early start the next morning to get them to the airport.

The best part of the talk was that it was completely unplanned.

The evening started with us finishing dinner and my two brothers, cousins, and I went downstairs to the "cosy room" to play a game of Uno, talk and just enjoy their last night. After a couple games, and a lot of laughing at some jokes the the boys were coming up with, we decided to watch a movie.

After a while of trying to choose something to watch, I suggested the movie "About Time" which is a romance and time travel movie. From the start of the movie, we were commenting on the characters decisions and laughing and just enjoying spending time together. And when the movie ended, we were soon in a conversation about the movie and time travelling and what we thought. After a  little while we decided to head upstairs to go to bed as it was past midnight, and Elise and her brother had to have an early start so we all had to wake up the next morning in time to go with them to the airport, or at least say goodbye.

But as soon as we were upstairs we decided we wanted a snack, so we all went into the kitchen, and we ended up talking more. I guess my youngest brother and Elise's brother were tired and a little bored of our conversation because they disappeared up to their rooms to get ready for bed, and my brother Benjamin, my cousin Elise, and I all sat down at the kitchen table.

The conversation started with talking about relationships, dating and school, and as I study at home and have not been in a relationship or anything it was just my brother and cousin talking the most at that point. I had thought about leaving then, because I was tired and didn't think I had much to add but I didn't feel like getting up and going to bed. We had never really sat down and talked like this before and it was something I didn't really want to miss, and I am so glad I did stay because as I said it was the best late night talk I have ever had.

We talked about a lot of things, that we had never talked about before, like about our grandparents, dreams we had had, opinions on religion and church and of course time travel because of the movie we had watched. I got to know Elise a lot more than I did before and I think it made us all a lot closer than we were before. We completely forgot about the time.

One of the highlighted part of the conversation that I remember was how we thought time travelling would work, if it was possible. I think it is funny how seriously we took it, while we all tried to prove how it would work. Benjamin said something very interesting which was "If a person travels to the past and kills their own grandfather before the conception of their father or mother, it would then prevent the time traveler's existence meaning he could not kill his grandfather as he would not exist himself."
Does that make any sense? We actually discussed this for a long time that night. It was really random yet we actually had a really nice conversation over the whole thing.

Overall, It was one of my favourite nights and I really got to know my cousin a lot more and it was so worth the little amount of sleep  we ended up having. Plus, we all got to sleep in the car, anyway, on the drive to the airport the next morning.

Have you ever had late night talks and what do you like about them?

And, for anyone who is interested in the time travel paradox thing I mentioned, comment your solutions. I'd love to hear how you think it would all work out.
